This page collects the finishing lists ("range of variables") from Major Work Activity F of the RSOS. It covers only what the standard lists. For what you actually do and need to know, see the study guide for Tasks F-14 and F-15.

Finishing materials and preparation (F-15.01)
- Finishing materials (interior and exterior): lacquers, resins, varnishes, paints, stains, water-based, solvent-based, oils.
- Qualities tested and adjusted: colour, sheen, viscosity, performance.
- Additives: solvents, dryers, slow-reducers, catalysts.
- Finishing material properties: drying time, appearance, durability.
- End user hazards: flammability, off gassing, toxicity.
- Safety requirements: WHMIS materials (labels, SDS), hazards, PPE, OH&S, jurisdictional standards.
- Application methods: spraying, brushing, wiping, dipping, distressing.
Application (F-15.02 and F-15.03)
- Manual finishing techniques: brushing, wiping, rolling, dipping, pouring.
- Manual tools and equipment: brushes, sponges, rags.
- Spraying systems: HVLP, air assist airless, automated spray systems, automated drying systems.
- Finished properties (spraying): colour, sheen, build.
- Conditioning: wash coat, pre-stain sealant, stain controller.
- Preparing the surface between coats: scuff sanding (manual and machine), removing contaminants (blowing off dust, tacking surface, vacuuming), filling imperfections, shading/toning.
- PPE: masks, filters, gloves, respirators, goggles, aprons, protective coveralls. It is selected according to the SDS and safety procedures.
