B-7 Machines components using automated and CNC equipment
Automated equipment such as CNC machines, edge banders, spray lines, conveyors and material handling systems can be set up, programmed and run by cabinetmakers to produce accurate parts efficiently. A working knowledge is expected; each manufacturer's machine needs specific training.
Sub-tasks
- B-7.01 Sets up automated and CNC equipment
- B-7.02 Operates automated and CNC equipment
Machining components with automated and CNC equipment
Setting up, calibrating, programming and operating automated and CNC equipment to produce pieces accurately and efficiently.
Key points
- A working knowledge of automated equipment is expected; manufacturer-specific training would still be required.
- Automated equipment listed: spray lines, conveyor systems, material handling, veneer presses, dovetailer.
- CNC equipment listed: CNC machining centres, edge banders, CNC beam saws, wide belt sanders, routers.
- Equipment is calibrated to manufacturers' specifications; settings are adjusted after a test piece is run.
- Knowledge includes basic CNC programming and CAD/CAM software and drawings.
- Equipment is checked periodically during use to ensure quality; material is loaded and unloaded according to automated equipment capacity.
- Performance problems include adhesion, burning, broken cutter, dull tools, clogged spray gun, timing of robotics, programming issues.
Overview
Automated equipment includes CNC (computer numerical control) machines, edge banders, spray lines, conveyor systems and material handling. Cabinetmakers can set up, program and run this equipment so that parts are made accurately and efficiently. The RSOS expects a cabinetmaker to have a working knowledge of this equipment, while recognizing that training specific to each machine's manufacturer would still be needed.
The task has two sub-tasks: setting the equipment up (B-7.01) and operating it (B-7.02). Both separate "automated equipment" from "CNC equipment" and repeat the same equipment lists:
| Automated equipment includes | CNC equipment includes |
|---|---|
| spray lines | CNC machining centres |
| conveyor systems | edge banders |
| material handling | CNC beam saws |
| veneer presses | wide belt sanders |
| dovetailer | routers |
Industry standards in this task are the same list as elsewhere: AWMAC, AWI, WI, CKCA, shop-specific standard.
B-7.01 Sets up automated and CNC equipment
What you do
- Work out the machining requirements from the drawings and project specifications.
- Calibrate automated equipment and CNC equipment to the manufacturers' specifications.
- Select, load and run the program for the application.
- Program or modify parameters as the application requires.
- Select tooling for the application, and install the tool to the manufacturer's specifications.
- After a test piece is run, adjust the settings or programming of the automated or CNC equipment according to industry standards.
What you need to know
- Types of automated equipment and of CNC equipment, with their characteristics and applications.
- The tooling used to operate automated and CNC equipment.
- Computer applications and basic CNC programming.
- CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software and drawings.
- Procedures to set up, adjust and calibrate both automated and CNC equipment.
Range of variables
- Automated equipment includes: spray lines, conveyor systems, material handling, veneer presses, dovetailer.
- CNC equipment includes: CNC machining centres, edge banders, CNC beam saws, wide belt sanders, routers.
B-7.02 Operates automated and CNC equipment
What you do
- Inspect material to find flaws and defects according to industry standards.
- Load and unload material within the capacity of the automated equipment.
- Check automated and CNC equipment periodically during use to ensure quality.
- Correct performance problems according to manufacturers' specifications and industry standards.
What you need to know
- Types of automated and CNC equipment, and the tooling used to operate them.
- Computer applications, basic CNC programming, and CAD/CAM software and drawings.
- The products applied with automated equipment and with CNC equipment.
- Procedures to operate, adjust and calibrate automated and CNC equipment.
Range of variables
- Performance problems include: adhesion, burning, broken cutter, dull tools, clogged spray gun, timing of robotics, programming issues.
- Products include: adhesives, finishing materials, packaging materials.
- Automated equipment and CNC equipment: same lists as B-7.01.
