What the RSOS lists

This page gathers the joint and edge-treatment lists that the RSOS repeats across machining (Task B-6) and laminating (Task C-8). The RSOS gives these as lists only; learn the names and where each list appears.

Joints (Task B-6)

The same list appears in B-6.03 (shaping solid wood), B-6.04 and B-6.05 (sheet materials) and B-6.06 (machining joints):

• dowel
• biscuit
• dovetail
• finger
• hardware
• rabbets
• dados
• mitres
• mortise and tenon

Machining joints (B-6.06)

• Joints are chosen from the drawings and project specifications.
• Templates are used to place repetitive joints accurately.
• Joints are made and then tested for accuracy against industry standards (AWMAC, AWI, WI, CKCA, shop-specific standard).
• Tools and equipment: biscuit joiners, drills, routers, dovetail machine, saws.
• Performance problems: chipping, burning, fit, flushness.

Joints used in laminating (Task C-8)

For curved laminating (C-8.02), the RSOS lists two types of joints: scarf and butt.

Edge treatments (Task B-6)

Listed in B-6.03, B-6.04 and B-6.05:

• In B-6.04 the edge treatment is chosen from the project specifications, and the cut list is adjusted to allow for it.
• In B-6.05 the edge treatment is chosen, then applied and trimmed. The edge bander is listed as a tool for this sub-task.
• The characteristics of a cut list are listed as edge treatments, material thickness, joints and grain direction.
