G-18 Installs architectural millwork products and mouldings

Overview

Cabinetmakers use a range of techniques, fasteners and adhesives to assemble and install architectural millwork products that arrive on site in sections. Mouldings are often installed to improve the overall appearance of the finished product.

G-18.01 Performs final on-site assembly and fastening of architectural millwork products

What you do

• Choose and use tools and equipment that suit the application.
• Assess site conditions: record temperature and humidity, and assess mechanical, electrical and building conditions.
• Protect floors and surrounding areas from damage during delivery and installation.
• Check the site for installation conditions.
• Locate structural components and utilities.
• Assemble architectural components before installation, following the shop drawings.
• Fit, level and fasten millwork products to walls, ceiling and floor so they are flush, square and aligned.
• Install passage doors and hardware according to the door and hardware schedule and the shop drawings.
• Apply panel adhesives, sealants, glues and caulking to industry standards.

G-18.02 Installs mouldings

What you do

• Choose and use tools and equipment that suit the application.
• Locate structural components.
• Lay out mouldings and wainscoting from the drawings so they look balanced.
• Cut and cope mouldings so the joints are tight.
• Position and secure mouldings with adhesives and fasteners, following industry standards.
• Hide nail and screw holes with colour-match putty, caulking and wax (lacquer) sticks.

G-18.03 Finalizes installation of architectural millwork products and mouldings

What you do

• Choose and use tools and equipment that suit the application.
• Check and adjust doors, drawer fronts and hardware to industry standards, so they look better and run smoothly.
• Reinstall removable panels and install grommets once the utilities are in.
• Find and repair imperfections to industry standards.
• Finish installing passage doors by fitting the passage door components.
• Clean the millwork products, passage doors and worksite using cleaners.
• Apply caulking and silicone to keep water from damaging millwork products, making sure they are compatible with the wall finish.
